Avengers: Secret Wars may draw on its comic book source material to create an entire world full of a breakout monster from Werewolf by Night.
Man-Thing has made his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the recent Werewolf by Night special on Disney+, with the swampy creature being one of Marvel's most horrifying figures. Despite this, he's quickly caught on with fans, who can't wait to see more of his character in further MCU entries. And one of those appearances could even be in the grand finale of Phase Six.
The MCU's sixth phase will be capped off by Avengers: Secret Wars. Likely adapting the more recent take on the story instead of the '80s classic, this film could include a whole world full of Man-Things. Here's how Werewolf by Night's "Ted" may be joined by others of his kind in an upcoming film.
Secret Wars Introduced an Entire World of Man-Things
The story of the 2015 Secret Wars had the many realities of the Marvel Multiverse coalescing into one gigantic "Battleworld." This world combined elements of Marvel Earths and storylines, with each intersecting in some way. One of them was the mystical "Weirdworld," which had once been the setting of a classic fantasy Marvel comic book of the same name. In this new incarnation, a section of Weirdworld was inhabited by not one but several incarnations of Man-Thing. Living in the Forest of the Man-Things, these creatures were led by the Swamp Queen of the Man-Things. This woman was their universe's version of Jennifer Kale, a former ally of Man-Thing in the mainstream universe.
United under their queen's command, the Man-Things would fight back against the tyrannical rule of Morgan le Fay. This mystical fantasy nature showcased the chief differences between Man-Thing and most other Marvel characters. Unlike them, he isn't a superhero in the slightest sense, instead being one whose fantastic nature put him in the realms of Eldritch horror. That terrifying premise meant Werewolf by Night was the perfect place for his MCU debut, but a massive superhero crossover might be where he next appears.
Avengers: Secret Wars May Bring Man-Thing Back to the MCU
As mentioned, Avengers: Secret Wars will likely adapt the 2015 storyline to some extent, and the Forest of the Man-Things may very well be one of its locations. The already popular mainstream universe Man-Thing could even be a part of the likely incursion that causes the film's events, as Man-Thing in the comics is known as the Nexus of Realities. That logically makes him a central part of the multiverse, and its forced combination may be used as an explanation for why there are so many Man-Things in Battleworld.
From there, these creatures could become a major part of the movie's final battle, using their incredible abilities to not only fight off enemies but also help to heal the fractured multiverse. An interesting idea would be to have Man-Thing sacrifice himself in a manner similar to fellow "plant man" Groot at the climax of the first Guardians of the Galaxy, calling back to and putting a cap on one of the MCU's most memorable moments. It would also work as a strong narrative bit of poetic irony. In the publication history of Marvel Comics, monsters such as Man-Thing were a dime a dozen before the arrival of The Fantastic Four and other superheroes. The MCU is only now bringing monsters into the foray with Man-Thing's introduction, but he could quickly prove to be an important part of undoing the damage to the multiverse.
